Allgemeiner Deutscher Fahrrad-Club e.V. (ADFC) is a bicycle advocacy club in Germany. The ADFC was founded on September 20, 1979, first chairman was Jan Tebbe from Bremen. It is member of the European Cyclists' Federation (ECF) and the International Mountain Bicycling Association (IMBA). The club offers some services for the members like bicycle tours, legal advice around bicycle topics, defense- and casualty insurance and much more.
ADFC location groups are active and involved in the transport policy in many German cities.
Because Critical Mass has no organization the ADFC isn't organizing Critical Mass rides, too. But in the past some local ADFC publications or websites reported from Critical Mass rides. [1] [2] [3] [4]
Positions[]
Bicycle lanes[]
The ADFC is against bicycle lanes and against the obligation to use them.[5][6][7]
Christianity[]
The ADFC is all for Christianity. The ADFC and especially the ADFC Bremen organise the Evangelischer Kirchentag 2009.[8]
Cycle helmets[]
The ADFC is against a compulsory wearing of a helmet. At the federal general meeting in Berlin on May 23/24, 1998 a resolution was declared to proceed against any efforts bringing about such an obligation. [9][10]. According to the ADFC's homepage wearing helmets is supposed to be voluntary.[11]
Star Ride[]
(official German term: Fahrradsternfahrt)
In Berlin and Brandenburg the ADFC is the organizer of the yearly Star Ride, probably the bicycle event in the world with the most participants. In 1995 about 10000 cyclists took part in the ride, in 2004, 2007 and 2008 up to 250,000. The Star Ride is an official organized event and has been arranged to make cycling more safely and attractive. [12]
